OUR STORY
The ARTKULTUR Journey: From Crisis to Creativity
In 2021, when the world stood still and children were confined to their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, a simple idea was born. What if we could turn isolation into inspiration? That’s how ARTKULTUR began – with art materials, hope, and children eager to create despite being locked down in their homes.
We watched in amazement as young artists emerged from behind closed doors, their creativity flowing onto paper and canvas. Children who felt trapped by quarantine found freedom in colors and shapes. More remarkably, they began teaching other children, sharing not just techniques but joy and purpose. When these young artists started selling their works, helping their families during tough times, we knew we had created something special.
For three beautiful years, from anxious pandemic days to our planned culmination in April 2024, ARTKULTUR touched countless young lives. Even when schools reopened in August 2022 and our activities naturally decreased, the spark of creativity kept burning. We thought April 2024 would mark the end of this journey, but sometimes the most beautiful stories write their own endings. The voices of our young artists and their families echoed with a simple request: “Please don’t stop.” How could we end something that brought so much light?
So today, ARTKULTUR will try to live on, adapted for a post-pandemic world. While our sessions are fewer, concentrated during school breaks, our commitment to nurturing young creativity remains unchanged. What began as a response to crisis has become a lasting gift to our community – proof that even in the darkest times, art can light the way forward.

What went well
What started as a simple solution to help children cope with COVID-19 lockdowns in 2021 blossomed into something extraordinary. Armed with basic art materials and a desire to help locked-down kids, we watched in amazement as creativity flourished behind closed doors.
The magic really happened when children began teaching other children. Without prompting, our young artists started sharing their knowledge – teaching techniques, mixing colors, and spreading joy. When they began selling their artwork, helping their families during the pandemic’s hardest days, we knew ARTKULTUR had become more than just an art program.
From 2021 to August 2022, we witnessed remarkable transformations. Shy children became confident teachers. Simple drawings evolved into sellable art pieces. What touched us most was seeing children light up with pride when they could help their families through their art sales.
Reality hit when face-to-face classes resumed in August 2022. ARTKULTUR naturally took a back seat as children returned to their regular academic lives. Our activities significantly decreased as school demands took priority. Yet, despite lying low, the creative spirit we nurtured didn’t fade completely.
Though less active, we continued until April 2024, when we planned to conclude the program. Surprisingly, our young artists and their families asked us to continue in some way. Now, adapting to just school breaks, ARTKULTUR will try to maintain its presence, though much reduced from its pandemic-era peak. This wasn’t just a crisis response – it became a valued program that showed us how art could light up even the darkest times.
What went wrong
While Green Heart Foundation’s ARTKULTUR program achieved significant success overall, an isolated incident with one participant revealed important areas for vigilance. The foundation identified concerning behavior in a single case where an artist showed weakness in values formation, particularly regarding donor appreciation. As this individual’s sales from artwork and art clinics increased, their focus shifted heavily toward personal gain, diverging from the program’s spirit of gratitude and community impact.
This isolated case presented challenges in financial accountability. The individual preferred undocumented private sales, leaving proceeds unliquidated and unremitted. Additionally, art materials would sometimes become unaccounted for when needed for activities. However, swift management action addressed these issues before they could impact the broader program.
The foundation took decisive action by managing out this particular situation before it could affect other participants or the program’s integrity. This experience, while challenging, provided valuable insights for implementing stronger oversight systems. Importantly, these issues were not representative of the broader ARTKULTUR community, where most young artists demonstrated strong values and proper program participation.
This isolated incident helped strengthen the foundation’s monitoring processes while highlighting the overall success of the program’s values formation among the vast majority of participants. The quick resolution of this situation demonstrated the foundation’s commitment to maintaining program integrity and protecting the positive impact ARTKULTUR has on young artists.
What we learned
The program revealed simple but powerful lessons. First, children’s creativity flourishes with the right support, even during difficult times. The foundation watched in amazement as young artists became teachers, sharing their skills with others naturally.
They learned that art programs need more than just teaching art – they need proper guidance and monitoring. While most children used their talents positively, selling artwork to help their families, one early case showed the importance of good oversight.
The foundation also discovered how to adapt. When schools reopened and regular activities had to reduce, they learned to make the most of limited time during school breaks. Quality of engagement became more important than quantity of sessions.
Most importantly, they learned that good programs last. When families asked to continue ARTKULTUR beyond its planned end, it showed that what started as crisis response had become truly valuable to the community.
These lessons now help the foundation build better programs: watch carefully, stay flexible, and focus on what really matters to the community.
What we will improve next time
As Green Heart Foundation refines ARTKULTUR, we’re shifting our focus to young artists who demonstrate true dedication and ambition – those who not only seek to learn but are committed to giving back. We’ve learned that the program’s greatest impact comes from nurturing individuals who genuinely value the opportunity and understand that support received enriches the whole community.
We’ll enhance the learning journey for these committed artists, creating clear paths from beginner to teacher. Our resources and attention will be invested in those who show consistent dedication, responsibility, and a genuine desire to grow not just as artists, but as community leaders. This selective approach ensures that our support reaches those who will maximize its impact.
The new ARTKULTUR will continue developing talented young artists during school breaks, but with a clearer purpose: we invest in those who invest in themselves and others. By focusing on artists who truly matter – those with both talent and character – we ensure the program’s resources create meaningful, lasting change.
Through these focused improvements, ARTKULTUR will maintain its mission of transforming young lives through art, but with greater emphasis on supporting those who demonstrate their commitment to both personal growth and community contribution. After all, the most impactful programs grow through the success of truly dedicated participants.
